Water heater rebates in Los Angeles come from two utilities: LADWP for electric heat pump models and SoCalGas for gas models. DuloCore checked each official page on October 13, 2026.
Los Angeles here means the City of Los Angeles. For a city served by other utilities, see the California water heater rebate table.

As of October 13, 2026, LADWP states up to $2,500 per unit for a heat pump water heater, and SoCalGas states $300 to $575 for a gas storage model and $80 to $1,500 for a gas tankless model.

| Heat pump, statewide | HEEHRA single-family rebates | Fully reserved as of February 24, 2026 |
LADWP's other rebate page, the Efficient Product Marketplace, lists no water heater.
What Does LADWP Pay for a Heat Pump Water Heater?
LADWP pays up to $2,500 per unit for an ENERGY STAR qualified heat pump water heater, based on gallon capacity and efficiency rating.
Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) is the efficiency rating. LADWP's Consumer Rebate Program page lists these amounts for equipment purchased and installed on or after November 1, 2025:
| Tank size | 3.3 UEF | 3.5 UEF | 3.75 UEF |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 to 55 gallons | $1,500 | $1,750 | $2,000 |
| 56 to 75 gallons | $1,750 | $2,100 | $2,250 |
| 76 gallons and above | $1,950 | $2,250 | $2,500 |
The same page sets rules:
- The applicant must be an LADWP residential customer with active electric meter service.
- Apply after buying and installing, postmarked within 12 months of the purchase date.
- Send a paid itemized invoice, the manufacturer specification sheet and a final approved Building and Safety permit.
- Limit 1 per residence. New construction, additions and Accessory Dwelling Units aren't eligible.
The page's minimum technical requirements also list the pre-existing gas water heater's capacity and UEF without explanation, so ask LADWP before buying if the old heater isn't gas.
What Does Southern California Gas Pay for a Gas Water Heater?
SoCalGas pays $300 to $575 for a high-efficiency gas storage water heater and $80 to $1,500 for a tankless model bought and installed in 2026.
The ranges are on the SoCalGas Rebates & Incentives page. The tiers are in its 2026 rebate application:
| Storage (20 to 55 gallons) | Rebate | Tankless | Rebate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.64 to 0.67 UEF, medium draw | $300 | .82 to .86 UEF | $80 |
| 0.68 to 0.77 UEF, high draw | $325 | .87 to .94 UEF | $900 |
| 0.78 UEF or above, high draw | $575 | .95 UEF | $1,100 |
| .96 to .97 UEF | $1,300 | ||
| .98 UEF or above | $1,500 |
A tankless unit must replace a tank-type gas water heater in a single-family detached home. A storage unit doesn't qualify if purchased from a statewide participating retailer. Buy and install between January 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026, and postmark a mailed application by December 31, 2026.
The application also says customers impacted by the 2025 Southern California wildfires may be eligible for increased rebates of up to 50% on the purchase of new energy-efficient natural gas equipment installed in a listed ZIP code. DuloCore's SoCalGas water heater page covers the standard rebate rules.
Are the Statewide Heat Pump Water Heater Incentives Open in Los Angeles?
No. On October 13, 2026, both statewide programs were fully reserved for single-family homes, and a San Fernando Valley offer was announced without amounts.
- TECH Clean California (fully reserved). The program's incentives page says TECH Clean California single-family heat pump water heater incentives are fully reserved and not accepting new reservations as of November 14, 2025.
- HEEHRA (fully reserved). The same page says HEEHRA single-family rebates are fully reserved as of February 24, 2026.
TECH Clean California's statewide single-family incentives are fully reserved, but its San Fernando Valley page says communities including Porter Ranch, Northridge and Van Nuys will be eligible for heat pump water heater incentives beginning in late summer 2026. On October 13, 2026, that page stated no amounts.
Can I Get a Free Water Heater Replacement in Los Angeles?
Possibly. SoCalGas lists a tankless water heater in its no-cost Energy Savings Assistance program for eligible homeowners whose gas unit is inoperable or hazardous.
The SoCalGas Energy Savings Assistance page says a household qualifies through a public assistance program such as CalFresh or Medi-Cal, or by income: from June 1, 2026 to May 31, 2027, no more than $39,900 for one person or $82,500 for four.
LADWP's assistance programs page lists bill help and names no water heater replacement program. The eligibility check shows which programs fit a household.
